“Straight Up With A Twist” Drinks Cabinet

SDC-70

“Straight Up With A Twist” was conceived as an exercise for the maker in advancing technical skills, and ended up as a celebration of the beauty and character of high quality timber and alternative design. With a carcass constructed from super-prime French Oak taken from a single tree, these boards have been bookmatched to form 18 different panels that highlight the beauty of the timber’s golden honey colour, straight grain and medullary rays. Utilising a bookmatching technique most commonly used with veneer rather than solid timber, each of the 6 straight upper panels mirror the grain in their adjacent boards, and these grain patterns then flow down to the corresponding upper triangular panel of the base.

While the base is an unashamedly sculptural form of a twisted, tapered hexagonal prism - an almost Brutalist interpretation of a twisted tree trunk - the upper internals of the cabinet are rendered in Brown Oak Burl veneer, again bookmatched to stand in contrast the clean, straight grain of the Oak exterior. Utilised in 16 panels used to construct the cabinet internals, this veneer is a statement of the varied character and beauty of oak - the burr veneer juxtaposed with the architecturally aligned solid oak is intended as an expression of just how unique this beautiful timber can be.

Standing at 1850mm high, this is an imposing piece that is intended as both sculpture and furniture - custom brass hinges, handles and shelf supports all mirror the hexagonal form of the wooden structure, reinforcing the theme of a Brutalist rendering of a natural, organic form.
