“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

Pricing Factors

  • The information in this section applies to both our off-the-peg pieces and commission work. That being said, all of our pieces are customisable for size and materials, which is why the prices mentioned on this page are indicative only.

As always, contact us for detailed information on prices.

  • Not all timbers are equal, both across and within species. For example, Super-prime Oak can have a very different appearance to lesser grades, not just in terms of straightness of grain and lack of blemishes/knots, but also in terms of how the timber finishes (open-ness of grain being a key consideration).

The higher the quality of timber, the greater the cost, but material price differences will generally be a lesser factor when compared with effort to build.

  • Size and dimensions will also be a factor, but generally only in terms of the impact on effort. Obviously, building a cabinet or wardrobe with 1 bay will have a significantly lesser price than a 4 bay wardrobe, both from a materials and effort factor.

  • Not always something that the client will consider, complexity will often have a significant impact on the effort and hence the cost of the build.

For example, the “Straight Up With A Twist” drinks cabinet took many months to develop due to the difficulty in determining the angles of the twisted hexagonal base, thus influencing its price.

  • This is by far the most impactful element of the price of a piece. Handmade furniture takes time (not just elapsed, but in terms of the effort spent on working on the piece), but the benefit of such time is that the client gets exactly what they specified in the brief, and the quality of craftsmanship is of the highest levels.

As mentioned above, size and complexity will affect effort and hence price, but in some cases there are economy-of-scale advantages to be had - for example, the unit price of a chair will be less if purchased as part of a set of six when compared with a purchase of just one or two.

“Off the Peg” Sample Pricing

  • Pieces based on the “A Twist on the Side” side table are completely customisable for materials and dimensions, and this is one of the few pieces where a change in dimensions will have a relatively significant impact on price.

SDC-74 as featured is available for £3500, with a £500 surcharge being applied to cover the effort associated with a change in table height.

  • The most appropriate indicator for our chair pricing is our Modernist Chair 2. In the listed configuration and size the price is £800 for a single order, £4000 for a set of 6.

All of our chairs are customisable for dimensions, wherever possible we aim to cover these customisation options in the base price.

  • Our Slatted Sideboard provides a good indication of a standard piece of furniture made with the finest materials - with its listed dimensions, this piece retails for £11000, but this is also a piece where complexity can have a significant impact on price. For example, removing or adding drawers will lower or increase the price, while other options such as lighting and different shelving options will add further increments.
